How to Choose the Right Receipt Roll

Measure width and diameter

Receipt roll sizes are written width x diameter. A 57x38mm roll is 57mm wide and 38mm across. The width must match what your printer or EFTPOS terminal takes; the diameter must be no larger than its paper compartment allows. A smaller diameter fits but holds less paper. The width and maximum roll size are usually printed inside the paper cover or in the device manual.

Thermal, bond or carbonless

Thermal rolls print by heat, so the device needs no ink or ribbon. Most EFTPOS terminals and modern receipt printers use them, commonly 57mm wide for EFTPOS and 80mm wide for receipt printers. Bond rolls are plain paper for calculators, cash registers and impact printers that print through an ink ribbon. Two-ply carbonless rolls also print through a ribbon and give a white original and a yellow copy, the usual choice for kitchen docket printers. If you are not sure which paper your device uses, scratch the end of your current roll with a fingernail: thermal paper leaves a dark mark, plain paper does not.
